Frequently asked questions

What Literex is, how conversion works, and why your documents never leave your machine — short and free of marketing fog.

Basics

What is Consiliari Literex?

A cross-platform Markdown-↔-DOCX add-in for Microsoft Word. Literex bundles Pandoc and renders Mermaid diagrams as true vector graphics — sharp at any zoom, in PDF export, and in print. No cloud, no account, no telemetry.

Why not just use the Pandoc CLI?

You can — and if you live in the terminal, that's the right tool for you. Literex is for people who work in Microsoft Word: opening a terminal to convert a paragraph is a context switch that breaks your writing flow. Under the hood, Literex is Pandoc — bundled right on your machine, so you get Pandoc's precision from a single button. On top of that, it renders Mermaid diagrams, which Pandoc itself doesn't do.

Do I need an internet connection?

No. After installation, everything runs right on your machine — conversion works offline, even on a plane. There's no server to reach and no account to sign in to.

What exactly does „Mermaid as true vector“ mean?

Mermaid diagrams are embedded as true vector graphics, not as screenshots. Diagrams stay razor-sharp — even at 400% zoom, in PDF, and in print. No other Markdown-↔-Word converter on the market does this today.

Platforms & privacy

Does Literex run on Word for Mac, Windows, and Web?

Mac yes, Windows yes, Web no. Literex is an add-in for Microsoft Word: Word for Mac and Windows are supported; Word for the Web and Word for iPad are not. That's a deliberate trade-off: keeping your documents on your machine was a hard requirement — a hosted service would have meant accounts, telemetry, and an extra attack surface we didn't want.

Which Word versions are supported?

Microsoft 365 as well as Word 2021 or newer, on macOS and Windows. What matters is support for modern Office add-ins; older Word versions aren't the focus.

Does my document leave my machine?

No. All conversion runs right on your machine — nothing leaves your computer. No document content, no metadata, and no usage telemetry is sent to an external service. No user account is required. The add-in works offline — it works on a plane.

Does Literex write or improve my text with AI?

No. Literex is deterministic: same input, same output — every time. Pandoc and Mermaid are conversion engines, not language models. Literex is a converter, not an editor and not an AI writing assistant.

Does this fit my AI/LLM workflow?

Yes — that's exactly what Literex is built for. AI assistants like ChatGPT, Claude, or Copilot prefer to deliver their answers as Markdown and Mermaid. But the finishing touches on the final document, you want to do by hand in Microsoft Word: formatting, word choice, comments and tracked changes, and finally sharing with colleagues who are at home in Word. Literex is the bridge — it brings AI-generated Markdown, Mermaid diagrams and all, into Word as native, editable content, with diagrams as sharp vectors. From there you polish it like any other Word document.

Provider, price & customization

Who's behind Literex?

Literex is built and maintained by Consiliari — a provider from Germany (Made in Germany). The add-in is free, and everything runs locally on your machine: no cloud, no account, no telemetry.

What does Literex cost?

Nothing. The add-in is free. There's no subscription, no license keys, and no account. We don't offer paid support.

Can I use my own reference.docx template?

Yes. Pandoc's reference-doc mechanism is supported, and the settings dialog exposes the path. Drop in your styled DOCX, and the conversion uses your fonts, headings, page settings, and table formats.

How do I control fonts, page numbers, and custom headings?

Through the reference.docx template. Pandoc reads the style definitions from the template and applies them to the converted document. If your team already has a style template for Microsoft Word, you can point Literex at it, and the output picks it up.
